Tukod, meaning ‘support’ in traditional Filipino vernacular houses, is the first foundation dedicated to championing Filipino Design locally and globally. It is a non-stock, non-profit, P.C.N.C. and 1% for Planet accredited foundation. It hopes to champion Archipelagic Creativity and Craftsmanship through placemaking, publishing, archiving, & celebrating culture and nature, through projects that design with and for the climate, biodiversity, and ecology, our archipelago.

︎︎︎ HOW TO SUPPORTEstablished in 2000, as a legacy of National Artist for Architecture Francisco Mañosa and now led by his grandduaghters together with a Board of Directors composed 100% of women creatives, entrepreneurs, architects, & designers, the Tukod Foundation aims to embody this idea of supporting and opening new windows of possibilities for the Filipino community, and our pride of place, utilising vernacular and traditional local creativity, for regional and global transformation.

Tukod is a Filipino ecological design and educational foundation that focuses on place-based creative and cultural climate solutions. The foundation addresses our archipelago's most urgent climate issue: the increasing vulnerability of frontline communities to super typhoons, flooding, sea-level rise, and cultural and environmental degradation, by regenerating culture through championing vernacular design and accelerating Indigenous wisdom and craftsmanship within local island ecologies. We aim to strengthen imagination, creativity, and resiliency believing that climate solutions and design are deeply embedded in and reflected by our cultural and ecological practices. ︎︎︎ OUR STORY
Tukod has since grown from supporting the development of one public school to now expanding to at least one community across all 18 regions of the Philippines such as the coastal community of Halian Island and the Indigenous community of Agusan Marsh. Directly engaging thousands of young people through co-created projects co-led with Indigenous leaders, youth networks, and cultural institutions.

BAYAY HALIAN

Pilot Placemaking ProjectBAYAY HALIAN, is an island creative space & community kitchen in the remote Island of Halian which is a part of the largest protected seascape and landscape in the country [SIPLAS], that regenerates island traditions from culinary to craft, and educates young people on culture-based climate solutions, how nature brings good food to the table, and how creativity can make this all possible. It will be pioneering what it means to truly craft and design around the climate of our archipelago. It is about time designers, creatives, and artists come together to change this system.

BAYAY HALIAN is designed in collaboration with Bea Rodriguez, Bea Carague, Janelle Gan, and the teachers of Halian Island, under the guidance of Arch. Angelo Mañosa of Mañosa & Co., and mentor Arch. Dong Ping Wong of Food Architects New York.
